I left Las Vegas back in the early 2000s. It was getting way too big and too violent for my tastes. A lot of that at the time was due to those fleeing California and that pace is really picking up as Democrats more and more turn the state into a third-world hell-hole of low wages, high taxation, illegal immigration, and progressive policies. People are sick of it and want something better.
The Libertarian Cato Institute noted this in its most recent “Freedom In The 50 States” rankings:
“California is one of the least free states in the country, largely because of its long-standing poor performance on economic freedom. Given this, it is likely no surprise that the Golden State is the most cronyist state in the union. …
“Despite Proposition 13, California is one of the highest-taxed states in the country. California’s combined state and local tax collections were 10.8 percent of adjusted personal income. …Local taxes are about average nationally, while state taxes are well above average. …
“Regulatory policy is even more of a problem for the state than fiscal policy. California is one of the worst states on land-use freedom. Some cities have rent control, new housing supply is tightly restricted in the coastal areas despite high demand, and eminent domain reform has been nugatory. The state even mandates speech protections in privately owned shopping malls. Labor law is anti-employment …”
California is now losing more residents than they are gaining even with illegal aliens pouring into the state. 40 million live in the state and the only ones pretty much procreating that make a difference are those that have broken our laws to get here in the first place.
That outflow has sped up even more recently. The Wall Street Journal reports: “Net migration to other parts of the U.S. from the nation’s largest state was more than 100,000 in 2015, 2016 and 2017, according to the Census Bureau. Total emigration from California to other states between 2006 and 2017 was 1.24 million, according to the Census Bureau, third highest in the nation behind only New York and Illinois.”
One place Californians are fleeing to is Henderson, Nevada – a suburb of Sin City. I’ve lived there but when I was there, it was pretty small and quaint. Not so anymore evidently. Henderson’s population over the last decade has exploded by 20% and totals over 300,000 now. Incredibly, according to Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles data as reported by the Journal, a whopping 56% of Henderson’s explosive growth between 2013 and 2017 came in the form of California exiles.
And the California influx is bringing their problems and politics with them. Vegas was already Nevada’s Hollywood and primarily Democrat. Looks like it is getting bluer. I can tell you this, the politicians in Nevada may welcome Californians and their money with open arms, but the citizens hate it. Just as they do in Texas and Idaho. They are seen as a liberal disease that corrupts wherever they put down roots.
Last September, in the midst of his tight U.S. Senate reelection campaign, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) warned supporters at a rally that Texans “are seeing tens of millions of dollars flooding into the state of Texas from liberals all over the country who desperately want to turn the state of Texas blue. They want us to be just like California, right down to tofu and silicon and dyed hair.” He’s absolutely right. It’s ironic that what Californians are fleeing is exactly what they implement wherever they go: high taxes, lack of morality, corruption, and crime come to mind.
At the National Review, Kevin Williamson spoke for many conservative Texans when he wrote: “You crazy Californians are going to love Nevada. Please don’t come here.” And please stay out of Nevada… but they won’t. Sigh.
