Since the sudden, but bittersweet news of George HW Bush’s passing Friday night, just eight months after his wife Barbara’s passing, much of the country has been in mourning over losing a great leader, who was genuinely kind, and oftentimes bipartisan.
However, with the 41’s president’s funeral services set for Wednesday, December 5, his family has just made a shocking announcement of exactly what President Trump, specifically, can expect from the service, after he was told he could attend based on Bush Sr’s wishes.
This past year has been marked with several notable deaths of political figures, including former First Lady Barbara Bush, and Senator John McCain. Before heading into 2019, the 41st POTUS has been added to that list, but his funeral will not be like the two aforementioned. President Trump didn’t attend Barbara’s funeral and was banned from McCain’s, whose funeral was infamously marred by verbal attacks on Trump, rather than meaningful memories of the deceased.
After that display, the Bush family want to know what they have planned for this man’s service, who was beloved by many. including former President Bill Clinton.
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump plan to attend George H.W. Bush‘s funeral — and according to a presidential historian who knew Bush, the former president included Trump in order to not “stiff a sitting president.”
Douglas Brinkley, a Rice University history professor and author, tells PEOPLE that Bush’s decision was motivated by his reverence for the office that he once held.
“For Bush 41, Trump is the president, and he does not want to stiff a sitting president, so in his own way, it is magnanimous that he is having Melania and Donald Trump come,” Brinkley says of Bush, who died at age 94 on Friday.
Brinkley believes that Bush’s wishes may affect Trump, 72, personally. “In its own way, it may normalize the estrangement Trump feels from the so-called establishment that Bush personified,” he adds.
Brinkley suggested that Bush had mixed feelings about the Trump era. “I think that [Bush] had such respect for the institution of the presidency that Trump annoyed him because he was trying to divide the country at times,” Brinkley tells PEOPLE.
“Nevertheless, when it came to being a stalwart Republican, he was for Judge [Brett] Kavanaugh‘s confirmation. He wanted to see Republican friends of his get posts in government,” Brinkley comments.
Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court in October was controversial after he was accused by multiple women of sexual assault. He denied the allegations.
Bush’s son, former President George W. Bush, showed support for Kavanaugh — who worked for his administration — in the wake of the scandal, telling Politico in September that he and wife Laura Bush “have known and respected Brett Kavanaugh for decades, and we stand by our comments the night Judge Kavanaugh was nominated.”
“He is a fine husband, father, and friend — and a man of the highest integrity. He will make a superb Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States,” George W. Bush previously said.
Brinkley mentioned Barbara Bush‘s funeral, which Mrs. Trump attended but Trump did not. The former first lady died at age 92 in April.
“But the cruder aspects of Donald Trump — the mean Twitters and the name calling — [Bush] found that gauche, and that is why Barbara Bush did not want Donald Trump at her funeral,” he says.
The White House said in a statement in April that Trump was skipping Mrs. Bush’s funeral “to avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush family and friends attending the service,” the Associated Press reported at the time.
Bush’s state funeral will be held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET. In a presidential proclamation, Trump declared that Wednesday would be dedicated to Bush’s memory and that flags should be lowered to half-staff in his honor for 30 days.
“President George H.W. Bush led a long, successful and beautiful life,” Trump tweeted. “Whenever I was with him I saw his absolute joy for life and true pride in his family. His accomplishments were great from beginning to end. He was a truly wonderful man and will be missed by all!”

In a statement, the Trumps wrote about Bush’s legacy, including Bush’s signature phrase about volunteerism, “a thousand points of light,” that Trump had ridiculed at a rally in July.
“Through his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and country, President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service — to be, in his words, ‘a thousand points of light’ illuminating the greatness, hope, and opportunity of America to the world,” the statement read.

Nearly 1600 Migrants Released Into New Mexico City In Just 10 Days
And….the invasion continues.
On Monday, Officials in Las Cruces, New Mexico, reported that Border Patrol agents released nearly 1,600 illegal migrants in their community over a 10-day period. The City was forced to spend about $75,000 for humanitarian assistance.
Officials said that Border Patrol agents dropped off 105 “asylum seekers” on Saturday to a local high school. Agents dropped off another 56 on Sunday morning, KVIA ABC7 reported Monday morning.
Border Patrol officials began releasing the illegal migrants apprehended in the El Paso Sector on April 12, the El Paso ABC affiliate reported. The releases come as the sector reached the breaking point with thousands of Central American migrant families crossing the border illegally in West Texas and the New Mexico boot heel.
The City of Las Cruces responded by setting up a network of temporary shelters to house the “asylum seekers” while they attempt to arrange travel to other parts of the U.S., the Las Cruces Sun News reported. Nearly 1,200 were dropped off by Border Patrol agents during the first week alone.
Las Cruces Sun News Reports:
LAS CRUCES – Border Patrol has released more than 1,000 migrants in Las Cruces in the past seven days.
Friday of last week, the federal agency began releasing migrants in Las Cruces because of a shortage of space at Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers. Most are migrants from Central America who are seeking asylum.
In response, the city established a network of temporary shelters to house migrants while the asylum-seekers — men, women and children — look to travel elsewhere in the United States.
Border Patrol dropped off another 140 migrants by 1 p.m. Thursday, bringing the total number since last week to 1,080, with more migrants were expected after 1 p.m.
On Friday morning, Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima said that of the total number of migrants released in town, “75 percent are gone,” having found sponsors in other cities. He estimated the number of migrants currently receiving assistance in Las Cruces at no more than 250 and probably fewer.
Miyagishima was in talks with his counterparts in Santa Fe and Albuquerque on Thursday and Friday about assisting migrants on a rotating basis among the three cities to give volunteers and aid facilities a chance to rest.
The mayor made arrangements with Santa Fe and Albuquerque to take the migrants on a rotating basis.
“It looks like they’ll be taking some. We just need to figure out transportation,” the mayor told the local newspaper.
We could easily handle 200, but not 200 a day,” the mayor explained. “That’s why I’m thinking if Sanda Fe can do 150 to 200 every three days, I think it is more manageable.”
New Mexico Homeland Security Department officials told the El Paso television station they expect more “asylum seekers” to continue being dropped off in Las Cruces “for several more weeks.”
